December 27, 2019: Munchkin Musings - December 2019: The Year In Review

Andrew wishes you a very happy holiday season and the best 2020 you can hope for. It's the end of another very eventful year! Let's look back at some of the highlights . . .

Warhammer!

The biggest Munchkin story by far this year was our collaboration with Games Workshop. So far this year, we've released:

Munchkin Warhammer 40,000

All of these have cards written by me and illustrated by John "WAAAGH!!" Kovalic. We've got more support coming in 2020 for both Munchkin Warhammer Age of Sigmar and (surprise!) Munchkin Warhammer 40,000, so keep your eyes on the New Releases page!

Crowdfunding

Speaking of busy years, we've had good luck with Munchkin on Kickstarter in 2019. The year began with the placement of Munchkin Unicorns and Friends into the hobby, continued with fulfillment of the Munchkin Steampunk: Girl Genius project and three new mini-expansions (Star Munchkin: Landing Party, Munchkin Cthulhu: Sanity Check, and Munchkin Zombies: Grave Mistakes). As I write this, we are partway through shipping the Munchkin Pathfinder 3 – Odd Ventures project (including Goblin Dice and a new Kill-O-Meter).

We had one more project we wanted to put on Kickstarter this year, but Car Wars Sixth Edition consumed all our planning and prep time. (Which is a good problem to have, considering how well it's doing. Have you backed it yet?) We'll be back with more Kickstarters next year, for sure, so keep an eye on both our accounts (SJ Games and Warehouse 23) – and follow them, if you haven't already.

Ben is awesome!Licensing

Our licensed partners have had a good year. Asmodée Digital launched Munchkin: Quacked Quest on November 19 and it's been making some buzz as lots of people have been shoving their friends into ponds to grab the duck! The OP released Munchkin Disney: DuckTales to Barnes & Noble and the hobby in November as well. And CMON continues working on Munchkin Dungeon, an early 2020 release – did you see Steve's Illuminator showing off the minis Ben has been painting? They're gorgeous, and the game is a lot of fun too!

We have more plans for licensing (in both directions!) in 2020, so keep your eyes open and your ears glued to the ground for news about those games and everything else planned for next year. And grab the duck!

Looking Forward

2020 is shaping up to be an excellent year for Munchkin fans. In addition to everything we've already mentioned, we have two new core games coming out next summer (one already at print and one being worked on as this posts), several smaller expansions that are jockeying for spots in the schedule, and a few other surprises.

Plus: Steve, John, and I will all be at FnordCon 2 in April, which is the only guaranteed way to get all of your triple-signature promo items triple-signed with a minimum of effort. We might have a few cool Munchkin events planned, too. Keep an eye on our conventions page to get the latest info on where we'll be throughout the year!

And to look really far ahead . . . 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Munchkin. (Yes, that is just as mind-boggling to us as it is to y'all.) We're already starting to talk about what cool stuff we might do to celebrate, but you can always share your ideas on the forums. You're the reason we're all still publishing this crazy game, so thanks! See you in January with a whole new year's worth of silly fun.
