Daily Illuminator Archive for October 2018
October 1, 2018:
The old world is gone, and the future awaits. The post-apocalyptic possibilities of GURPS After the End
are spotlighted this month in Pyramid #3/119: After the End II
. . .
October 2, 2018:
The tournament was held again using a triple-scale 3D version of KEAR Coliseum (from the Car Wars Arenas
set). The format was four 8-player qualifier games, with the top two in each qualifier earning a seat at the final match . . .
October 3, 2018:
As part of preparing to run demos of The Fantasy Trip
at conventions, there's been a bit of construction going on, in the office and at my home. Eric is running a labyrinth factory in the office, building new 3D terrain using the Hirst Arts molds, while my wife and I do the same at home . . .
October 4, 2018:
Excellent job. You cracked the encryption on this post . . .
October 5, 2018:
Whether you're looking to strut your stuff with cards from Fashion Furious
, or to pick up more fabulous cards, we've got an upcoming event you don't want to miss. It's time for the Fashion Furious Day of Wreckoning, where players can win never-before-seen promo cards and revel in the second expansion for the Munchkin CCG . . .
October 6, 2018:
We've done this kind of thing before, but never on such a huge scale. Last month, as the various components of The Fantasy Trip
came together, we made PDFs available to our Kickstarter supporters, and opened forum threads for comments and errata . . .
October 7, 2018:
As we move closer to sending The Fantasy Trip
to the factory, some of us in the office are preparing tools for upcoming demos. (Also, it gives us a good excuse to play with miniatures, terrain, dice, and more fun stuff.) . . .
October 8, 2018:
You can never have enough adventure when you're a GURPS Dungeon Fantasy
hero. Fortunately, we're here to imperil you again . . . with GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Adventure 2: Tomb of the Dragon King
Tomb of the Dragon King
– by Matt Riggsby, author of GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Adventure 1: Mirror of the Fire Demon
and Dungeon Fantasy: Against the Rat-Men
– tasks the adventurers with finding a long-lost artifact amid the titular tomb . . .
October 9, 2018:
Monday was our Retailer Day, when we invite local (and not-so-local) retailers to come see what's new, what's hot, and what's coming up. We feed them lunch, play games with them, and generally have a good time.
2018 is the fourth year we have held a Retailer Day . . .
October 10, 2018:
We started work on these metal Illuminati Coins
over a year ago. We told Alex the sizes and denominations we needed, and told him to run wild . . .
October 11, 2018:
I received word from the elves in Warehouse 23 that they have opened the door to the holiday vault! Your Christmas-themed Munchkin
swag is once again available, so go check it out! . . .
October 12, 2018:
Thank you to the entire TsunamiCon team for being so generous with their space and time. Last week, at the convention, I ran demos of The Fantasy Trip
where players entered the dungeon and fought giant spiders, orcs, an ogre, and far too many skeletons . . .
October 13, 2018:
Founder of Chaosium, philosopher and sage, writer and game designer – Greg Stafford leaves a space that will never be filled, but he also leaves decades of inspiration and a unique body of work . . .
October 14, 2018:
It's a drone, because you see, Birds Aren't Real. No, they're not figments of your imagination, the things exist – existed – but now, they're actually drones and have been since 2001 . . .
October 15, 2018:
The nice thing about licensing a game with as much content and history as Warhammer 40,000
is that there is a whole lot of very cool stuff we want to include in our game. In fact, there's so much cool stuff that we had to make a second expansion to fit more of it in! . . .
October 16, 2018:
Our (very) short Kickstarter project to create Illuminati Coins
is entering its final hours! Tomorrow at about noon in Austin, the project will come to a close, and we'll start manufacturing these new metal coins . . .
October 17, 2018:
We're pleased to announce that after several internal editorial passes, a pre-mortem meeting, and sending the files to Games Workshop for approval, Munchkin Warhammer 40,000
is at print. (In fact, we sent it off a couple of weeks ago; we've had so much news to share that this is the first chance we've had to mention it.) . . .
October 18, 2018:
This is a long shot, but . . . does anyone out there still have a copy of the source code for the 1985 Autoduel
game from Origin Systems? The folks at Electronic Arts are so awesome that they have reverted rights to that game, but they had no copies of the source . . .
October 19, 2018:
An important and exciting step in taking a game from "crazy idea" to "crazy idea that is a physical thing people can buy" is the production sample
. This is an actual copy of the actual game as it comes out of the actual factory, bundled up and airshipped directly to Austin at some expense, so we can make sure that all the components – cards, rules, box, etc. – match what we were expecting to see . . .
October 20, 2018:
Great news! The new Ogre Miniatures, Second Edition
hardcover rulebook has completed the manufacturing stage and is now at the "take a cruise across the Pacific" part of its journey from our offices to Kickstarter to the factory to the warehouse to your home . . .
October 21, 2018:
Before there was Munchkin
. . . before there was Chez Geek
. . . there was Dork Tower
. John Kovalic's Dork Tower
comic was featured in all the top gaming magazines of the day (where "top" is defined to mean "carries Dork Tower
," obviously), starting 20 years ago in 1998 . . .
October 22, 2018:
We're about to start shipping out the Munchkin Party Pack
, but our support for your social life doesn't stop there. We've created a certificate for the winner of your event – whatever it is – that you can download, print, and fill in the appropriate blanks with the appropriate (or inappropriate) answers . . .
October 23, 2018:
Hope everyone is having a spooooooky October! Here's our monthly roundup of news from the world of Munchkin
. . .
October 24, 2018:
On November 1, we will close preorders for The Fantasy Trip
. At the moment, we expect to announce the game for release to stores in April, at which point the game will be priced at the final MSRP and not the special Kickstarter pricing . . .
October 25, 2018:
We're very pleased by the excitement at the announcement of Munchkin Warhammer 40,000
. We're even more pleased that several of our translation partners are just as excited and are going to be publishing versions of Munchkin Warhammer 40,000
in their own languages later in 2019 . . .
October 26, 2018:
All of these comics have kept my attention for a long time, which means they all have deep archives. With the exception of xkcd
(which I'll talk about tomorrow), there is no point in jumping into the current strip, any more than you'd start reading a novel in the middle . . .
October 27, 2018:
There's a secret government agency that wants to help you . . . as long as you're not human, that is! Its name is Skin Horse, and it's X-Files
on laughing gas . . .
October 28, 2018:
If you missed out on the latest Ogrezine
project, which also included two new Ogre
playmats, now's your last chance to preorder the PDF as well as the playmats! We'll close the BackerKit preorders tomorrow, so please be sure to check out all of the Ogre
offerings and place your order before it's too late . . .
October 29, 2018:
In the Ogre
group on Facebook, Jeff Kelland shared photos of his custom terrain for use with the plastic Ogre
miniatures that we've produced over the last year. Amazing work, Jeff! . . .
October 30, 2018:
Next week, Steve and I are scheduled to visit Madison for Gamehole Con, a convention I've heard so many great things about that I'm excited to see what they have to offer. Steve's running a special event for a few supporters of The Fantasy Trip
project (preorders close this week!), while I'm running a couple of demos . . .
October 31, 2018:
Work progresses! I got to play again today – a two-player game with Randy . . .
