Daily Illuminator Archive for August 2014
August 1, 2014:
As you already know, we like to give out a lot of free stuff when people buy things from Warehouse 23. It's our way of thanking you for liking our games so much! . . .
August 2, 2014:
We're getting everything ready for Gen Con this year, and one of the steps on the road to Gen Con is working with the factory to make sure we have new games at the show. Be at booth 1401 when the doors open on Thursday, August 14, where we will have limited numbers of:
Munchkin Legends 3 -- Myth Prints
Munchkin Halloween Pack
Mars Attacks -- The Dice Game
Revolution! . . .
August 3, 2014:
Tribe Comics & Games is the closest thing SJ Games has to a neighborhood game store. There are lots of game stores in Austin, but Tribe is the closest. They're working on expansion plans, and are asking for community support to help get to where they need to be . . .
August 4, 2014:
I was lucky enough to be chosen as an Industry Insider Guest of Honor for Gen Con this year, which means that I get caviar and champagne every morning, am carried to the convention on a litter by burly manservants, and . . . Oh, wait, no . . .
August 5, 2014:
If you're looking for a funny party game to break out at your next big get-together, you should go check out Love 2 Hate
! It's being made by our friends over at Green Ronin, and they're running a Kickstarter campaign to fund it.
Love 2 Hate
revolves around completing sentences about why you love or hate a particular thing (toy soldiers, hippies, or whatever), often with hilarious results . . .
August 7, 2014:
Zombie Dice kinda took us by surprise. Yeah, we thought we were making something pretty cool, but we had no idea
that it was going to explode the way it did . . .
August 8, 2014:
PAX Prime is coming fast, striking at the end of this month, and once again the Steve Jackson Games crew will be out in force and ready to teach you games. You can again find us on the second floor in the "corral," over by the juice bar and Rock Band
stage (unless they've moved it again this year), and we're going to be there with games to play and stacks of Munchkin
promos to hand out to you all . . .
August 9, 2014:
We are extremely sad to report that Dominic Postligione passed away yesterday. Those of you fortunate enough to see the Adventure Retail team in action at San Diego Comic-Con, Gen Con, or DragonCon, or who were able to visit The Source Comics and Games in Minnesota, don't need to be told what a kind, helpful man Nick was . . .
August 10, 2014:
Worldcon is approaching fast . . . it starts August 14 . . . and this year it's in London. I have not visited London nearly enough times . . .
August 11, 2014:
It's time! Our staff is packed and on the way to Indianapolis for Gen Con where we'll be teaching games, entertaining many of you at the Munchkin
Tavern, and (please, please, please) scoring a copy of Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Empire vs Rebellion
. . .
August 12, 2014:
If you aren't following the official @SJGames Twitter account, there's a very good chance you're missing out on the latest news from the office. Several of us -- especially Rhea, Andrew, and Steve -- post to the account on a regular basis, and every now and then we like to share stuff that isn't 100% ready for the world . . .
August 13, 2014:
Sure, everybody likes going down into the dungeon and killing monsters for their stuff; that's a given. But what if that stuff had all sorts of clockwork gadgetry and steam-powered awesomeness attached to it? . . .
August 14, 2014:
What's the future of paleontology? Maybe 3D virtual fossils -- all the research, none of the digging . . .
August 15, 2014:
We're giving you two announcements in one Illuminator, because we've got so much news we can't wait to share it! Announcing Munchkin Gloom
, by Atlas Games, is a fantastic game . . .
August 16, 2014:
Love is a many-splendored thing. So is loot . . .
August 17, 2014:
At the end of this year our special Munchkin
Booster Promotion ends and the exclusive card forever vanishes and will not return. What?
You say you haven't already participated in the booster promotion? Hurry, guys, because it would be terrible for you to miss out on this silly card that gives the monsters in your Munchkin
game one adorable boost in power . . .
August 18, 2014:
If you're a fan of classic GURPS Third Edition
supplements -- or just love to mine those volumes for new ideas -- then two must-haves are now available digitally on Warehouse 23. GURPS Classic: High-Tech
is your guide to modern-day equipment and weapons, while GURPS Classic: Ultra-Tech
goes through the possibilities and permutations of more far-flung fare. Both guides are essential for their genres, packed with gear and options for Third Edition players . . .
August 19, 2014:
I've been doing this for a long time – by which I mean "working on GURPS
." I'll have been at it for 20 years come August 2015 (or November 2014, if you count my first freelance project). But August 19, 2014 marks another anniversary: the 10th birthday of GURPS Fourth Edition
. . .
August 20, 2014:
We uncovered a very small stash of the original 2008 Munchkin Silver Piece
and a somewhat larger stash of the 2011 Munchkin Silver Piece
. They aren't doing us any good languishing in the back of the warehouse under the Potted Plant, so we're making them available to you! . . .
August 21, 2014:
I got to play Eight-Minute Empire
, by Ryan Laukat, at the game room here at Worldcon. I got back to my computer and turned to the Internet to learn more, and found out that not only is there a second version called Eight-Minute Empire: Legends,
but a supplement for Legends
is on Kickstarter now . . .
August 22, 2014:
As mentioned earlier this week, August 19, 2014 marked the 10th birthday of GURPS Fourth Edition
. In honor of this achievement, Warehouse 23 is offering a whopping 23% off the price of all -- yes, all
! -- GURPS
products published by SJ Games until noon CDT on August 27, 2014 . . .
August 23, 2014:
I am the law! Want to move your apocalypse to Mega-City? . . .
August 24, 2014:
What you think you've known about history is a lie. There's a war going on over control of reality itself . . .
August 25, 2014:
Having never designed a bag before, I thought you might like to see some of the iterative process I went through to take the Munchkin Messenger Bag
from "cool idea" (see "Where Did The Munchkin Messenger Bag
Come From?" for that
story) to "actual product." My first sketches helped determine the size of the bag and how much Munchkin
goodness we could stuff inside it:
Once I settled on the components that the bag needed to hold, I made a new sketch and mockup image to send to our manufacturer:
I also came up with two designs for the zipper pulls, and we decided on the rubberized version for the final bag:
After seeing the first tooling sample of the bag, I added a few more design tweaks, including the screen-printed logo, collapsible dividers (in case you wanted to use the bag for other purposes), and the hidden zipper pouch in the top flap. I sent the manufacturer one more Photoshop mockup:
I'm incredibly proud of the final product, and I know Munchkin
fans will enjoy it! . . .
August 26, 2014:
Our various sites have been hit by a lot of traffic of late, so we're upgrading our servers to accommodate the load it's under. The bad news is that our websites will be down for a few hours on Wednesday the 27th . . .
August 27, 2014:
a new edition implied many different requirements. Sean and David handled the fundamental duty of writing the core rulebooks, but a whole bunch of us were involved in other tasks . . .
August 28, 2014:
It should come as no surprise that we're going to PAX this weekend, and here's what you can expect from us while we're there! We'll be in the Corral on level 2, under the escalators, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day (August 29 to September 1), though we may go longer if people are having a lot of fun . . .
August 29, 2014:
We always love going to Gen Con and seeing all of you awesome fans, and we're happy to report that this year was amazing for us! Our friends at Adventure Retail brought advance copies of a bunch of our upcoming releases to sell at the booth: Mars Attacks! . . .
August 30, 2014:
This is a project to turn a James Ernest game into a digital app. It's called Fish Cook, and (duh) it's about cooking fish . . .
August 31, 2014:
It certainly took me long enough. Here's the 2013 Stakeholders' Report . . .
