December 30, 2003: The Beagle Has . . .

What? Landed? Crashed? Wandered away? We don't know. After we hyped the imminent arrival of the European Space Agency's Beagle 2 lander on the surface of Mars, it's only fair to mention that something seems to have gone quite wrong, which is not that unusual in the checkered history of attempted landings on the Red Planet.
